Hello All, Little intro about me: I am on H4 visa with masters degree and last year moved to states. I am at present in the state of dilemma how to peruse my career and confused when and where I should start. Lot of my friend have asked me to join volunteer organizations or work in library. But seriously I am not looking something to "kill my time". I want to make proper use of my skills and education.I was wondering if you people could share your success stories/ or your friends, what they have done in past to progresswith their career like studying - then in which stream, if volunteering- then with which organizations and if you/ they got work permit by changing status from h4-h1 visa (then where you/ they successful in finding job and how long it took to find one. Please share your stories or someone you know...May be the inspiration of your story could open doors for others and give them a lead in the directions. Please share!!

Hi All, Iam Madhura moved to US very recently and currently iam located in Deland central florida,I have born and brought up in Bangalore. I have completed my masters and has 5 years of work experience with top MNCs like Accenture and capgemini. I worked as SAP consultant with my last organisation. I have learned the fact before leaving to US, that Iam not authorized to work for short term because of my H4 VISA, hence iam quite happy and enjoying life as home maker, offcource for sometime....:) I would like to make some Indian female friends and want spend some quality time with them, as its too boring for being lonely at home when my husband goes out for work.Kindly let me know, if anyone of you staying in Deland or near to Deland......

I wouldnt recommend looking for a job on H-4 without EAD. You will anyways not be eligible to take up the job and in future if you get the EAD, you cannot reapply for any job in the same firm.

I can share my story with you. I moved to the US after working for 5 years in risk management. Gained a lot of experience but all in India. When I moved, I was on H-4 with no authorization to work in the US. My husband recommended that I should do my Masters here in the US to gain a better understanding of the work culture here and also to have an answer to employers when they ask me about my break. I did my Masters and now I have an offer to join a risk analytics firm..It paid off studying again!

Beautiful H4 ladies, This may not be a career advice but can help you to make some new friends in your area. Try meetup.com. you can join for free and find groups in ur local area based on your ineterests. You can even start a group of your own for activities. Great way to get introduced to local people and local culture. May be you can make some good contacts for finding jobs along the way. Best wishes.

This summer, I am planning to do a week long session for young professionals on topics which will be useful for those looking to work in the US. I am not a head hunter who can place anyone in jobs but I am a coach and trainer who can guide you in resume building, the job search process and preparing to interview, learning about what to be prepared for in the initial weeks and months on the job, cross country work- differences and other topics/career skills that will benefit your future career in this country. I have 20 years of US and international work experience, and professional credentials in the area of Learning and Development.I plan to spend about 2 hours a day for 5 days a week in this session which will be offered remotely via skype or such a web conferencing tool.It will be in a group format with 4 to 5 attendees (from any part of the US) at the same time. Please let me know if interested via the email provided and I will send details of the date and time once I have 4 to 5 students that I need in order to run a session. Thanks for your interest,Jyothi Shankar

Hi, fellow H4 peeps! :) Good to hear all the inspiring stories, well most of them! :pSo of course even iam here to share my piece of "H4" story :) Well iam living here in Indianapolis since last 12 months and enjoying my stay here. And in this past yr.i did some volunteering work, gave GRE & TOEFL and travelled a lot! And it was amazing, one hell of a ride as we were newly married. But now my main dilemma starts as iam planning to do Masters in Information Systems (MSIS) from Indiana University ,the college is asking for 4years of graduation like any other college in US. Whereas i had studied B.COM from Mumbai university which is a 3yr.course and just 10 months of work experience. So you can see my profile is very weak which pushes me back in the admission race. So iam in a great predicament although iam keeping my options open as may be this week or next, ill be speaking with the advisor on how to go further with this crunch. Then ill let you guys know whether ill get admitted or is there any solution to make the 3yrs of grad.into 4years. Most likely id be told to join an undergrad.college to make up for the one year and then join Masters. Anyways if thats the only solution then id be doing that!

Volunteers needed for a FREE pilot study which will provide you some valuable skills in job search and career acceleration. In turn, it will provide me some valuable feedback on running remote coaching using web conference. You could be in any state of the US and volunteer remotely. I have been working in the Corporate world for several years in the US with additional international experience in Australia and the UK. Being in the area of Training and Coaching, I decided to launch my own company last year which would provide interactive coaching to young professionals anywhere to accelerate their careers. It will also coach those who have some work experience in their home countries, have migrated to the US and are looking for jobs OR have found a job but are looking to be more effective/impactful in the new environment by learning business skills and soft skills relevant to the US workplace. This summer I could use a few volunteers (4 to 6) who are willing to participate in my FREE pilot runs. This is not a placement company but is meant to coach you on several aspects of job related business skills and soft skills. If you are a more seasoned professional you may be interested in certain other skills like Learning Consultancy, Business Development and Product Management. Looking forward to getting some enthusiastic responses and participants for my pilot run that will cover a subset of topics in Soft Skills and Business skills! Thanks, Jyothi

Via volunteermatch.org iI found few organizations calling in for volunteers one being blind service association. Even if it doesnt generate income its a positive way to channelize our resources.

Hi GirlsI know being on H4 is very depressing. I am here on h4,visa too. We all go through these stages like depression, loneliness or boredom. Also no matter what one says everyone has to experience it individually. Couple of things that have helped me get out of these situation are mainly to get up and deal with it, give myself a push among other ideas. First thing I did after months of depression was to learn driving. I know everyone says Sure I all learn it when I go to work or have kids to drive around. Dont put it away. Learn it asap. Push your husbands to teach you till you get your license. Trust me that makes you so independent and feels great. May be you can drive your girlfriends around (casino, baby). Just go for it and get one. When you get your license drop your guy at work and keep the car for shopping. No extra car expense. Yoohoo. I know when you have kids you really get busy. I dont have any yet. I got myself a puppy. Hes 3,years old now. Never ever felt lonely after the day I got him. Made almost all my friends because of him. Volunteering is another thing I am into. But this wasnt to get a future job. I just thought I should give back to the community. Its super easy to find volunteer work. Just go to volunteermatch.org . There are many such volunteering sites around. I met so many people just with this experience. Try your hand at it. Other things that are easily possible is freelancing online. Computer programmers or otherwise, there are many sites that are genuine you can work in almost any field. Done that, check. Eventually if you are pretty adamant on getting a job, just find a consultancy who can sponsor you an H1 b. (Yes they sponsor almost anyone). The point is to get up and do something.I know most of us come from these great family backgrounds, back home, where almost everything was laid out for us. All we had to do was probably study or get a great job on a straight path. But out here we actually have to learn to stand back on our feet amongst all restrictions. My inspiration, loads of women who have no great knowledge, face language issues but made it to pretty cool stuff, out here.Find yours. You could always send me an email at Seattlefrens###### - Login To See Contact Information

Hi gals, I have a Ph.D from US and I am on H4 due to bad market and limited opportunities for people in my field. Its been almost 10 years I am in the US and it feels very frustrating that I still have no stable job. What a waste of my skills. I have done volunteering for about 3 years but I am tired of it now and feel like I need a real job. I will be starting a excecutive degree program at UW this Atumn so get some tech training and exposure.

Hi Deepa,I came here on H4 and was a long journey for me till I got GC. But it never stopped me from applying to various companies. If they like you, they work around your status. Like I did, I told them at the time of my interview about my status and how willing I am to work for them and work towards making things in their favor. The status is never an issue. It is just a block in our mind.

Hey,I think i am the only victim of H4 but now i have seen many as me.now my mind is has cleared from one thing ,I have completed my double masters in Finance, so i was under this impression that i am not from IT background that why i am not getting any job .but now i have seen many victims who is having more experience and they belongs to IT background but they are not having H1B.Believe me this will be not be a good idea to start your education.the reason being we have already completed our masters and earned a lot of experience. What i am thinking you can do some work remotely for Indian firms, which is located in India.Guys use your contacts from India and get some work from there.I know you will not get the same amount or Currency rate.It would work if you can sit home and do this. But like as me I cant sit home in front of this stupid screen. So the second option is to apply for non profit organisation.they can only help us and allow us to move out LEGALLY.

Hi all, I am Niralee, came to states on H4 about 10 months ago. I am a Chartered Accountant and used to work in India since i was 19. So coming here on H4 and spending the entire day at home is killing me. But on the other side the best part of being on H4 is that i get so much time to learn new things and give time to stuff i really enjoy doing. So i have to admit sometimes i kinda like being on H4. But being new in the city, I would love to make some new friends here. I live in downtown seattle near Pikes Place..so dont find many Indians around this area like bellevue :( would love to meet some lovely ladies over a cup of coffee...

Hi Neetha. You can avail loan from US, but it is mandatory to have a co-signer who is a US citizen or green card holder. If you have a co-signer it is better to take loan in US due to low interest rates. Your interest rate would also depend upon the credit history of your co-signer. Good Luck!!

My dear friends from India and now suffering from stuck-with-H4; syndrome :)This is my story that I had posted a year ago in this forum as my introductory message on this forum:"I came to this country a year back and had similar problems as what everyone has stated. I was very depressed since I was working in India and now I could not do so since I was on H4. The BIGGEST thing about getting jobs is (a)Dont ever get in touch with any consultant. they are useless people. (b)Study and clear interviews for full time position. The assumption everyone has is that I am on H4 and so no one will give me even an interview I cant tell you how wrong that assumption is. The market is booming and there is always a place for you. Programming is no rocket science and trust me there are more dumb people working in top corporations than you can imagine... I used to speak with consultants and each one turned me down or spoke rudely. Finally, I boycotted them and picked up the books and studies for 10 days straight after posting my profile on job sites. you will not believe this, but within one month I got two full time job offers and am currently employed as a full time employee of one of the bigger corporations in the Seattle area. bigger companies dont have any qualms sponsoring your visa, its a problem only for the small consultancies. So go for it girls! coz you are so worth it!"sp please take heart and START PREPARING FOR INTERVIEWS! Hi all, Im new to the forum but really enjoyed reading about H4 stuff. I was a statistical analyst back there in India. Around a year back I came to US on H4 visa. As I hear from friends that USA is land of opportunities for software professional so I want to enter in the software field. But being from life science background I do not qualify to take up masters degree in IT. Also bachelors degree will take another 4 yrs :( Please guide me which course/training to take so that I can enter in software field. Im open to testing / web designing / any other course which will give me job in software field.

Hi all currently I am on h4 for 6yrs now.I did bachelors of engineerig in india and masters in systems eng in London and got married right away after masters.the first year of marriage was fun and eventually started getting bored and applied for h1 in 2008, i was picked in lotteryand later the story went tragic and my h1 petition was rejected(b/c my sponser company didnt provide sufficient docs)later I got pregnant but then due to recession I couldnt file for h1b but didnt give in hoping everything would be fine.....but currently I feel hopeless and losing confidence in myself.I am trained in software testing, business objects and recently started asp.net I am willing to do volunteer software job or go to community college or another masters degree(I am worried about transcripts and college letters back from India)have no idea how to find volunteer job. Can anyone help me in finding answers to above questions, also is there any chance for h1 filing with no rfe.you can E-mail me at skmaduguri###### - Login To See Contact Information

I find the outpouring of similar stories on this discussion thread fascinating, and I would love to write about this issue of educated, experienced professional women moving to the States with their husbands and not knowing what to do with themselves. Hello,I am Hemal Patel(Morlidhar).I am in USA on H4 visa since 4 months.I have completed my B.E in Electronics and communication from India. Also I have completed my masters in Communication engineering from India.Because of certain disadvantages of H4 visa,I researched about and decided to go to college and doing masters again in my field.I think degree from USA would help me in my career.I can get an exposure to this new country which was not possible by staying at home. And I cleared TOEFL exam in USA and I already appeared for GRE in the year 2007.On that basis I applied to one University in USA.I got admission in Southern polytechnic state university in MS in Electrical engineering course and my college starts from January.College is just 20 mins away from my place.I live in Atlanata,Georgia...I would like to make new friend who live around me...You can contact me on my email: it ispatel_hemal86###### - Login To See Contact Information

Best way is to register as a student, not necessarily in a college, a community college is fine, once you have an F1 visa, it gets easier, at the end of your college you can work one year on OPT (Optional practical training), than then go from there. If anyone knows how to set up Microsoft Dynamics CRM software on a Windows server, let me know, I can pay you to do that! Hem Ramachandran 512.970.6336 hem###### - Login To See Contact Information

Hello all i am kashish sawhney from ludhiana, punjab, India. I want to come to USA . I need help from u all -actually the situation is like this My best friend wants to go to either phoenix or vancouver(Canada) as his relatives live there. He asked me to come with him. I want to go to either of the place to do some job as i am under a huge loan of 15 lakhs. But i dont know whether i will get a job there or not. I am an MBA marketing. I have an experience of 1.5 yrs. I want to do job there in USA. bt dont know whether i will get a visa or not? second this, if my friends relatives sponsor me, should i look for a job first before entering your country or find the job after reaching there?? what is the possibility of getting a work permit?? should i come or tourist visa and find a job or work permit??? I can work anything there. But is confused with all these questions??? how much money will be involved in all this, because i will stay there at someones house and dont need to pay the rent. so only visa and passport and flight fees will be there for my reach?? highlight on this too??plzz some one guide me on my questions???

I can understand how it is to stay home and do nothing after working in India. Working for volunteer orgs is probably ok but if the motto to work is to make money and keep busy, then there are lots of avenues to work even while being on H-4....trust me, I have lived in the US for 10+ years. I am in a different situation than any of you ladies. I have been working for the past 10 years but after I had a baby, I wanted to stay home with the baby, so I started working part-time. I do get bored at home and found other ways to keep myself busy. If you are interested in knowing me, shoot me an email at smitha0186###### - Login To See Contact Information

If you are young and want to spend the money and effort then you could go to school here. Volunteering at school and other places is not to kill time. It is actually something you could put into your resume when you find a job. It looks better in your resume then saying that you did nothing in those years you waited for your visa and job. I came here on a h4 went through a lot of frustration before I finally found a job and got all happily settled.

I came to this country a year back and had similar problems as what everyone has stated. Programming is no rocket science and trust me there are more dumb people working in top corporations than you can imagine...I used to speak with consultants and each one turned me down or spoke rudely. So go for it girls! coz you are so worth it!

Hi girls,I am on h4 too but my story was kinda different. I came here in may 2010. I got pregnant and all the year went on taking care of health, making to appointments etc., Mean while i studied for my GMAT and Toefl and applied to UW. I got admission this year. My school starts in sep. Now i want to stay at home like and take care of my 3month old and at the same time i dont wana miss this opportunity. nOw I wish i were you. I think going to school is probably the best idea that one can do if you are not bored of studies:)BTW snehal M , I have some questions regarding uw & visa things, can you please give me your email.

Its great to share stories and get some inspiration :)I moved to Seattle more than an year back on an H4 visa with a Masters in Design from India. My husband pushed me into applying for another masters at UW though I wasnt interested in going back to school at that time. After I moved here, I started doing volunteer jobs in my discipline (i.e. design work),so that I could pursue something productive. Though volunteer jobs sound like a time killing activity, but its better to be involved in something rather than sitting at home and doing nothing. Its also a great place to make contacts, meet new people and looks great in your resume. I have realized people in the US appreciate it if you have volunteered before. Anyways, once I got an admit from UW, I decided to pursue another Masters (I will graduate in June 2012). Going back to school has been a great experience for me, education here is very different from India. I moved to F1 visa when I started school, got part time job offers from my faculty and a summer internship in Seattle. All in all, I am sponsoring my entire education by myself and making a career too. I dont mean to boast by saying all this, the point is that you have to pursue something if you want to advance in your career. It could be volunteer jobs, going back to school or something that you are interested in. But sitting at home with nothing to do kills your motivation for living here in the US and also affects your married life!

Hey guys,I came to the States about 6-7 years ago. I was in the same situation (H-4 with Masters in English and a B.Ed.). I knew I wanted to pursue a career in teaching so I started researching online. It took me almost two years to get into a Masters program in Secondary Education. However, during this time I took a couple of tests that were necessary to get credentialed i.e., certified to teach in the state of CA, and also, I volunteered as a tutor in a local tutoring institute. Researching online courses, applying to universities, getting recommendation letters, writing your SOP, taking GRE and TEOFL and much more takes tons of time and energy. I was lucky to get a 100% support from my husband. So after two years of prep. I finally got in to a prestigious university and moved from H4 to F1 status. It was a one year intensive course after which I got a 1 year OPT (optional practical training) visa which helped me get a job without worrying about sponsorship. After that again was lucky enough to get a EAD (went back to H4) and now have my green card. Do not be disappointed or dejected. Volunteering will not be a waste of time as you could add that to your resume and your essay if you apply to a univ. Keep working, keep researching, keep talking to people, go for a counseling session to your local community college and get an idea about the available course/s and which one/s will suit you best. If you have prior degrees from India, get your credentials evaluated from accredited organization like WES and get them converted to the US standards (GPA) and all. Good Luck!

Hi all, good to see this discussion here as even I am in same situation.I have been on H4 visa for 3 years and have done some volunteer work with 2 organizations related to my field. But I felt doing such volunteer work will be of no use after few days because more work you do the more they make use of you and inturn pressure you esp desi consultancys.Even i had worked in India for almost 2 years and I understand how it would be for anyone to be on H4 visa.So now I started taking rest and enjoying with friends at home and if we want we all can form a group of friends here in CA.I live in Dublin,CA and if anyone is interested we can share our contact details and get in touch with each other.

Doing volunteering is not just killing a time and lib is not only option. You can volunteer in any field In which you have studied. This way you can be in touch with what you have studied and what new is going in that feild. Atleast when you will go back to India you can continue your job there.
