DINNER BY STARLIGHT
Indian Summer's annual 'Dinner by Starlight' is one of the most anticipated events in Vancouver. The annual fundraiser for the Indian Summer Arts Society is a singular occasion; Canada's culinary magician Chef Vikram Vij prepares a special, one-time-only menu for a guest of honour. Past dinners have included a 'Nawabi' banquet for Indian cinema legend Sharmila Tagore, a BC-India fusion feast with celebrity chef, Sanjeev Kapoor, and a 'Dabba' (tiffin box) meal in honour of the legendary Dabbawalas of Mumbai.
Author Saroo Brierley's book Lion was made into a blockbuster movie of the same name. The book is based on Saroo's own life story.
Saroo was lost on a train in India at the age of five. Not knowing the name of his family or where he was from, he survived for weeks on the streets of Kolkata, before being taken into an orphanage and adopted by a couple in Australia.
Despite being happy in his new family, Saroo always wondered about his origins. He spent hours staring at the map of India on his bedroom wall. With the advent of Google Earth, as a young man, Saroo would pore over satellite images of India for landmarks he recognized. And one day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for. Then he set off on a journey to find his mother.
Lion is his moving and inspirational story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit - hope. Saroo will be sharing his story with our guests at Dinner by Starlight and we are so excited to have him!
Dinner by Starlight takes place at a secret location, revealed just days before the event only to ticket holders. Past locations have been as varied as the Lord Stanley Ballroom in Stanley Park, Terminal City Club, Van Dusen Gardens and the East India Carpets warehouse in the Armoury District.
Seats to this one-time only meal are limited and sell out quickly. Enjoy a gorgeous night out and support a great cause.
