The first Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centenary Award for Excellence in Biomedical Research, instituted by ICMR in 1991-92, was announced in 1994 (Dr. G. Padamanabhan, Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, is the first recipient of this Award).

8/7/1934Gandhi begins a fast for penance following the violent treatment of a Hindu leader by some of his followers.
3/17/1999An international seminar on UN Peacekeeping was co-jointly hosted by Ministry of External affairs and Ministry of Defence at New Delhi from 17 to 19 March 1999. The seminar was conducted by HQ Army Training Command, Shimla on behalf of the Indian Army. A total of 126 foreign delegates from 71 countries participated in the seminar.

5/6/2000Saurav Ganguly wins the Ceat International Cricketer of the Year award 1999-2000.
5/2/195340 persons were reported losing their lives today in the first crash of a jet airliner in commercial service. The jetliner, a British-built Comet, plunged to earth in a violent storm just a few minutes after taking off from Calcutta. It was carrying a party of rubber and tin operators from Malaya to England. There were no survivors. Two Comets have crashed before, one last October and one in March, but neither was carrying passengers.
5/27/1930Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was arrested during Salt Movement.
5/31/1970Indira Gandhi called for international help as the civil war in Bangladesh, or East Pakistan, had turned two million people into refugees. Many of them were suffering from cholera and smallpox. The authorities of West Pakistan refused to care for them, and India couldn't afford to.
4/4/1910Sri Aurobindo left politics and reached Pondicherry, where he made the seat of Yoga.
4/3/1992Nagaland brought under President's rule.
4/13/1963Babu Gulab Rai, famous hindi critic, passed away.
