10/29/1964Priceless and irreplaceable gems, including the famed 'Star of India' of 563.35 carats and 2.5 inches in diameter, were stolen from the American Museum of Natural History, New York, USA, in a daring burglary. An alarm system was discontinued years ago as was the all-night guard in the gem hall, both for reasons of economy. The jewels were uninsured due to high-priced premiums. There were other jewels too that were also robbed during this time.

1/15/1949General K. N. Kariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief. He was the first Indian to reach to this post in Indian Army. In 1956, he was designated as Chief of the Army Staff - General, later Field Marshal. This event is commemoratively observed as Army Day.

4/1/1935The Reserve Bank of India was established as a Central Bank and the job of issuing notes was entrusted to this bank. The Commissioner's office which issued currency was abolished and was substituted by the Governer of the RBI. The issue offices scattered around the country came to be called as the regional offices of the Reserve Bank.
