8/15/1947On the the stroke of mid-night on 14th August 1947, India became independent and was partitioned. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime minister and Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first president of free India. The mixed economy policy was taken on a five-year plan basis for economic development. On 26th January 1950, India became a democratic and is the biggest democracy of the world today. In 1956, on the basis of languages, India was divided into 14 states and 6 union territories. Today, there are 27 states and 7 union territories.
1/1/1972Indian states abolished the previous rulers of Privy purses and privileges.
3/2/1984Mother Teresa University inaugurated by Mother herself at Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu.
2/27/1987UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar recieved the Jawaharlal Nehru award for International Understanding.
11/3/1988Indian armed forces mounted special operations to help the Indian Ocean archipelago of the Maldives and dealt with the 150 sea-borne invaders who stormed Maldivian Capital, Male and soughted to overthrow the democratically elected Government of the Maldives.
4/16/1997G. Kishenchand, former Indian Test cricketer, died.
7/22/1918During the First World War, India's first fighter pilot Indra Lal Rai's plane was shot down in battle by Germans planes near London. Rai had fought for Britisher's Force.
8/1/1996T. S. R. Subramaniam was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary of India. He held this office till 31-03-1998.
12/20/1957Kalinga Prize for 1957 awarded to Lord Bertrand Russell.
12/3/1991Satinder Kumar Lamba appointed India's Ambassador to Pakistan.
