2/16/1944Dadasaheb Phalke passed away in Nasik at the age of 74. He is remembered as the 'Father of Indian Cinema'. He produced India's first feature Film, 'Raja Harishchandra'. He was Director, Producer, Writer, Editor & Laboratorian. Dada Saheb Phalke Award issued by Government of India is given in his memory.

6/23/1984An Air-India jumbo jet plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near Ireland today, killing all 329 people on board. Indian officials said the crash apparently was caused by a bomb placed aboard the jetliner by a Sikh extremist group as retaliation for an army raid.

12/10/1969Norman Borlaug, the Iowa-born crop expert, whose research on new strains of high-yielding rice and wheat has led to a Green Revolution in developing countries, was awarded the Nobel peace prize today. Working at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center of Mexico since 1944, Borlaug, 56, has directed a team of agronomists working on the development of new crop plant strains that have allowed Third World farmers to multiply yields dramatically. His organization has trained farm technicians from 29 countries, including India, Pakistan and Turkey, enabling them to move steadily toward the goal of self-sufficiency in food production.
4/11/1999The DRDO has successfully flight tested AGNI-11 with a range of 2000 km, using solid propellant rocket motors in both stages and rail mobile launcher system from its new launch complex in the Orissa Coast. With this launch the country has reached the point of operationalisation of AGNI-11 as a weapon system. (1-1-2000).
