Historical Event on 8/9/1942

The Congress at its Bombay session passed the famous Quit India resolution, calling for mass struggle on non-violent lines on the widest possible scale, under the leadership of Gandhiji. He stressed that ""We shall either free India or die in the attempt; We shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery""; popularly known as ""Do or Die"". But before the Congress could start the movement, the government arrested all the major leaders and the Congress was declared illegal. Spontaneous popular revolts broke out with the battle cry of 'British Quit India'.

7/10/1927Ganga Ram, great social reformer and founder of Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, died in England while functioning as an active member of the Royal Commission on Agriculture. He was against dowry and child marriages and advocated widow re-marriage and also established institutions for vocational education and education for adults.
11/24/1969Guru Nanak University established at Amritsar, Punjab.
11/16/1990Chandrasekhar Government wins confidence motion of 280 for 214 against and 11 abstained (17 members were absent).
10/2/1869Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi) born to a Bania (trading caste) family at Porbander, Kathiawar. He was the youngest of the three sons of Karamchand alias Kaba Gandhi, Prime Minister successively in Porbunder, Rajkot and Vankaner States, and his fourth wife Putlibai.
5/9/1874First horse-drawn tram car started running in Mumbai.
2/1/1942No.1 Squadron arrived in Burma with its Lysanders, flying tactical recce missions from Toungoo before transferring to Mingaladon with a flight deployed at Lashio.
6/6/1961Central Institute of Fisheries Education, a deemed university, was established in Mumbai to impart post-graduate education and training, mainly to the in-service fisheries personnel of the country to provide trained manpower for the fisheries developmental activities.
3/19/1936Raghav Kaneria, great artist and decorator, was born.
4/1/1930Government announced 15 yrs and 18 yrs as minimum marriageable age for girls and boys. This is presently remodified.
12/15/1950Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, first deputy Prime Minister of independent India also known as the 'Iron Man' and Bharat Ratna awardee, died.
